Riding on the momentum it gained during the recent local body elections, the Left Democratic Front has extended its winning streak in Central Travancore with the CPI(M) led coalition almost confirming victory in ten out of the 14 seats across Kottayam and Pathanamthitta.
With just the counting of postal ballots to be completed, the coalition has confirmed victory in the assembly segments of Changanassery, Ettumanur, Vaikom , Poonjar and Kanjirappally in Kottayam. In Pathanamthitta, the coalition has taken unassailable leads in four out of the five seats and is locked in a neck and neck battle with the UDF in Ranni.
In Pala, however, it has suffered a major set back with the Kerala Congress (M) chairman Jose K Mani suffering a shock defeat at the hands of the sitting legislator Mani C Kappan. In the three remaining assembly seats of Kaduthuruthy, Kottayam and Puthuppally, the UDF candidates won without much fuss.
Significantly, the coalition has also succeeded in bringing down the lead of the senior Congress leader Ooommen Chandy in Puthupally to 8504 votes from 27092 votes this time. Mons Joseph, who won Kaduthuruthy by a margin of 42256 votes in 2016, too witnessed a sharp fall in his lead position to 3692 votes.
During the previous assembly elections, the LDF had won just two seats (Vaikom and Ettumanur) in Kottayam and four in Pathanamthitta. Despite suffering its worst-ever drubbing in the parliament elections in 2019, the coalition went on to win two more assembly segments -Pala and Konni, in the bypolls later that year.
